What is it?
Friispray is tool with who you can create some digital graffitis. This project was developed by the english collectif Jam Jar, with the licence GPL.
Official site of the friispray project
How Can I Use It ?
With a paint spray, who's got infrared LED, the user can draw has a graffiti artist on a screen. He choose the color shade,the form of his lead and his size. The screen can show what you want. a wall, a wagon, a picture...
Who can use it ?
This installation is able to raise public awareness of artistic use of digital tools in a fun way and without showing the technologic tools.It is also a way to discover a urban cultural form: graffiti, with his beauty, his special codes... It can be also a tool of preventive measures about respect of urban facilities.
What Do I Need ?
- A fake paint spray with infrared led
- A projection screen
- A wiimote
- A bluetooth key
and those software:
- Adobe air
- Wiimote whiteboard
- Friispray.air
What is Friispray ?
Field of investigation: Multimedia education
Digital Graffiti
With spray paint fitted with a diode and an infrared wiimote, you can “make a graffiti” on a screen. You choose your color, shape and size of the brush. You can draw whatever you want.
Educational objectives pursued:
stimulate the imagination, creating graffiti understand the techniques of graffiti understand the possible diversion of digital technologies
Informations:
public / age (6-8, 9-11, 12 +) ; level of complexity in the implemented activities (easy / intuitive application of basic knowledge, need for specific technical prerequisites) ; time to devote to the activity (one session of 1 hour, half day, full day, activity on the week or month)
Teaching value of a project around the technique of stop motion :
this type of activity can help to raise awareness about art digital tools to the extent that the activity is fun and the result immediately visible; This technology is also a measure to discover a cultural form of urban graffiti, with its beauty, its special codes ... this activity can be an important measure in awakening young people to art in general, to question the place and role of the artist in society;
The presentation of the activity
Realization :
we plan to work in order to install the device and use it as a form of expression that may be free or regulated
Technical resources necessary to carry out the activity:
Materials:
- a spray can equipped with infrared diode / aerosol cap
- Wiimote
- screen
- Bluetooth passkey
- a computer
Software:
- WiimoteWhiteboard: http://friispray.co.uk/software/ to divert the main functions of the Wiimote which includes 4 infrared cameras
- friispray Air : to draw
- Adobe Air / Air Environment
Prerequisites for the activity :
- the foundations of computer science
- to understand the light, turn off the computer, keyboard and mouse information to discriminate on the screen;
- to know find, move, rename files, create folders;
- to know how to connect a peripheral to a computer;
- to understand that it is possible to transmit information by means other than a computer keyboard and mouse;
- to know how to install a projector;
- to respect the safety instructions related to the use of computer hardware;
- to cooperate with other participants of the activity;
The scenario of basic animation/ see the map :
- acquisition of equipment, including aerosol cap
- implementation of the technical
- calibration device for the wiimote using the Wiimote whiteboard software
- testing, introduction to graffiti
- creation of virtual graffiti using the software friispray
- ability to export the graffiti on digital media (clefs. ..)
The implementation of the activity
1 / Principle of the device
It works by sending the position (x, y) and on / off signal from an infra-red LED (similar to those found in many television remote controls) mounted in an aerosol, to the infrared camera the front of the Wiimote. This signal is then transferred via Bluetooth to a computer. Whiteboard software can control the mouse pointer. This control allows the user to turn the spray paint on a screen via the application of friispray.
2/ Installation kit
